The Ocotillo Shrub

Ocotillo is a shrubby succulent native to the southwestern U.S. Plants have an elegant vase-shaped habit, with long stems that emerge from the base. Ocotillo survives prolonged dry spells by shedding its small fleshy green leaves and going dormant. Bright red flowers that appear in the spring are highly attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. Use a structural element or focal point in the landscape.

Best Ways to Care for Your Ocotillo

Soil – Well-draining soil is essential to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. A mixture of sand and gravel is perfect as Ocotillo doesn’t tolerate waterlogged conditions.

Water – A newly planted ocotillo requires regular watering about once per week for the first few months to establish roots. Once established, Ocotillo will need minimal watering during extended dry periods.

Temperature – Ocotillos thrive in hot desert climates, tolerating temperatures as low as 10 degrees before suffering serious injury or damage.

Fertilizer – Ocotillo does not require fertilization.

Pruning – Pruning is not needed for Ocotillo.

Pests – Ocotillo is relatively pest-resistant. Keep an eye out for common desert pests, but it typically does not suffer from serious pest issues.
